FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Matt Kingsley was named Monday the Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, according to an announcement by league officials. The honor is the second of the season for an SFA player, with both awards going to Kingsley.
Kingsley averaged 20 points and seven rebounds in a pair of wins that moved SFA into sole possession of first place in the Southland with two games to play. The senior from Houston, Texas, led the team in scoring with 23 points in a 68-52 home victory over Texas State on Wednesday and led the squad with eight rebounds in Saturday's 71-66 win at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Kingsley added 17 points against the Islanders. He shot 58.6 percent from the field for the week, connecting on 17-of-29 attempts. Kingsley recorded three blocked shots at A&M-Corpus and was one assist shy of tying a season-high with three against Texas State.
Kingsley leads the Lumberjacks in both scoring and rebounding with 15.9 points per game and 7.3 rebounds per contest. He has been one of the hottest players in the league of late, averaging 19.3 points and 8.7 boards over the last six games. SFA is 5-1 in those contests, and Kingsley has broken 20 points four times in that stretch with two double-figure rebounding performances.
Kingsley earned his first player of the week honor on Dec. 8 after averaging 26 points -- including a career-high 33 against Jackson State -- in a pair of wins.
As part of the Senior Day festivities, Kingsley will be honored before Wednesday's game against Central Arkansas, along with fellow seniors Nick Shaw, Josh Alexander, Benson Akpan and Cameron James. As part of the Lumberjack Basketball "Beat the Buzzer Night" promotion, any fans who arrive at the game at least 30 minutes in advance of the 7 p.m. tip will receive free admission. Fans who arrive between 6:30 and 7 p.m. will be admitted for half price -- 3$ for adults; $2 for children between 8 and 18 years old.
