FRISCO, Texas - FRISCO, Texas - Junior Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye has been named Southland Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Week announced league officials in a release Wednesday afternoon. It marked the first time in her career that Egboba-Waye has received the honor.
Egboba-Waye, a product of Lancaster (Texas) High School, punched her ticket into the postseason in her first outdoor meet of the season Saturday. Competing at the Northwestern State Relays in Natchitoches, La., the Ladyjacks' star posted an NCAA regional-qualifying mark in the long jump after winning first place with a leap of 19-feet, 11-inches. Egboba-Waye nearly recorded another regional qualifying mark in the 100-meter hurdles by finishing second overall with a time of 14.02 seconds.
Although Egboba-Waye earned the league's weekly honor during an outdoor competition, classmate Frednisha Marshall goes in search of national honors today at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Marshall, one of the nation's top weight throwers, goes in search of more individual accolades when she begins competition at 4 p.m. in the event.
