FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin head track and field Phil Olson has been named Southland Conference Women's Indoor Coach of the Year announced league officials Thursday afternoon. SFA also had three athletes received annual honors, including Stephanie Ganter and Nick McCloud who earned league freshmen of the year recognition, and thrower Frednisha Marshall repeated as the league's indoor outstanding field athlete.
Olson was named SLC Coach of the Year after the Ladyjacks steamrolled the rest of the field at the 2009 indoor championships. The Ladyjacks posted 158 points at the meet, outdistancing their next closest competition by more than 44 points. It is the fifth conference coach of the year honor during his 10-year career, and the first since the 2006 indoor season.
Marshall defended her title as the reigning indoor field athlete of the year with a dominating performance in the throws events. She started the meet by winning the hammer throw with a school, and conference record, toss of 67-1.50. The NCAA provisional throw places Marshall fifth nationally. Along with the individual title in the weight throw, Marshall added runner-up finish in the shot put with a throw of 64-0.50.
McCloud and Ganter were both recognized as the league's top freshman. Ganter, who was also named SLC Cross Country Freshman of the Year, won the women's 5,000 meters with her time of 17:27.47. She came right back the following day to post a runner-up finish in the 3,000 meters, crossing the time line at 10:16.27.
McCloud just missed an individual title in the men's 60-meter dash. He clocked a time of 7.91, missing the individual title by four one-hundredths of a second. McCloud returned to the track to record a time of 22.27 to finish fifth in the men's 200 meters.
