NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin track and field team released its 2010 schedule head coach Phil Olson announced Friday evening. The upcoming indoor schedule, which begins Jan. 15, has seven dates prior to the Southland Conference Championships, while the outdoor schedule consists of 10 meets before the conference championships.
"This year's schedule is a departure from where we have gone in year' past," said Olson. "We are returning to LSU for the first time in a few years, and we are returning to Arkansas and Mt. SAC (Walnut, Calif.) outdoors. The Southland Conference Indoor Championships will be held at the University of Oklahoma in late February, so we will be traveling there a couple of times to get a look and feel of the facility. Likewise, it has been over three years since we competed at UTA for a conference meet, so we will return there in late March to allow our athletes to get used to that facility.
"As we have also done consistently over my tenure here, we will see outstanding competition on some of the top track facilities in the country, such as LSU, Arkansas, Mt. SAC, the University of Texas (Texas Relays), Texas A&M (Indoors) and the University of Houston (Indoors). This will help us prepare for the challenges of our upcoming Southland Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships, which are always extremely competitive," added Olson.
SFA opens the 2010 campaign Jan. 15 at the Leonard Hilton Invitational in Houston, Texas. It will be one of only three trips to Houston during the indoor season for the SFA men's and women's teams this season. The Lumberjacks and Ladyjacks will follow that up with trips to Texas A&M (Jan. 16), LSU (Jan. 22) and Oklahoma (Jan. 30) before heading back to Norman for the 2010 SLC Indoor Championships (Feb. 26-27).
The 2010 outdoor schedule consists of 10 dates prior to the start of the conference championships May 14-16. The upcoming outdoor slate will have SFA traveling to Waco, Houston, Austin, Baton Rouge, La., and Fayetteville, Ark. The multi-event athletes will open the outdoor season March 18-19 at the Angelo State Multis in San Angelo, Texas. The rest of the squad will begin outdoor competition 24 hours later at the Baylor Dr. Pepper Invitational.
The NCAA Regional Championships will be hosted by Texas May 27-29. The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be in Eugene, Ore., June 9-12.
