JACKSON, Miss. - Stephen F. Austin used a late push in the second half behind a big night by leading scorer Eddie Williams to take a 79-68 win at Jackson State Tuesday in the Williams Assembly Center. The win is SFA's first on the road and gives the Lumberjacks (3-2) back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
Jackson State (0-5) led at the half, but SFA shot 62.5 percent from the floor after halftime and Williams scored a season-best 24 points - one off his career high - to lead the `Jacks to the win. After regaining the lead at the 13:43 mark on a Walt Harris jumper, SFA never relinquished control.
Jackson State tied the score twice down the stretch, but SFA outscored the Tigers, 19-10, over the final seven minutes to pull away for the win.
Harris joined Williams in double digits with 15 points, and Denzel Barnes added 12 points. Both totals marked career highs. Junior forward Jordan Glynn finished with eight points - all in the second half - and pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds.
Glynn's effort led the `Jacks to a 31-24 margin in rebounding.
SFA forced Jackson State into 17 turnovers and outscored the Tigers, 28-10, in points off turnovers. Williams led that effort with a career-best seven steals.
Tyrone Hanson scored 20 points to lead the Tigers, and Rod Melvin added 16 points.
With the win, SFA completes a two-game sweep of its season series with Jackson State. The Lumberjacks also swept both ends of a home-and-home set against the Tigers in the 2007-08 season and have now won five straight in the series with Jackson State.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action this weekend when they host the inaugural Etech Lumberjack Classic. SFA will take on Southern on Friday and Cal State-Fullerton on Saturday. Both games are slated to begin at 7:15. Central Arkansas will play the early games at 5 p.m. against Fullerton on Friday and Southern on Saturday.
