FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin earned four selections to the 2009 All-Southland Conference Soccer teams and took two superlative honors, according to a Tuesday announcement by league officials. Megan Cash and Kylie Louw were each named to the first team, and Louw took Freshman of the Year honors to go along with Jordan King's Newcomer of the Year award. Kim Kimmel and Kelli Barnes landed slots on the second team.
SFA's four selections to the first and second teams are the third-most in the conference this season and the most for the Ladyjacks since putting seven players on the all-conference teams in 2007. Louw and King teaming up for the freshman and newcomer honors marks the first time since 2005 and just the third time in Southland history for two players from the same team to take both of the awards designated for first-year players.
Cash is making her third straight appearance on the All-SLC list but her first as a first-teamer. The senior forward is tied for the team lead with seven goals and has posted three assists -- both career highs. Cash was an honorable mention selection last season and took second-team honors as a sophomore in 2007.
With her team-leading 19 points, Louw has posted one of the best freshman seasons in Ladyjack history. The South Africa native has scored five goals, and her nine assists are tied for second in the Southland. She is the third SFA player to take Freshman of the Year, following former Ladyjacks Amanda Alders (2005) and Kendra Cannon (2001).
King has started all 18 games of her sophomore campaign after transferring from Oklahoma. She has logged 1,466 minutes in the SFA backfield, which ranks second among non-goalkeepers this season. King has helped the Ladyjacks to five shutouts this season and has attempted six shots with three on goal. She is the third player in program history to take Newcomer of the Year honors. Lauren Fricks earned the award in 2006, and Camren Norris took it in 2005.
Kimmel and Barnes are each making their first appearance on the All-SLC teams. Kimmel, a junior forward, is tied with Cash for the team lead with seven goals. She has assisted on three other scoring plays for a total of 17 points. Kimmel leads the team with three game-winning goals. Barnes is the Ladyjacks' leader on defense and has started all 18 games. In all, she has a streak of 36 consecutive starts, dating to last season. The junior's 1,657 minutes this season lead all players. She has lent a hand in the team's five shutouts and has attempted three shots, all on goal.
Senior Kelli Wilson and sophomore Edwina Forbes both earned honorable mention consideration. Wilson has put up a goal and an assist this season to earn the third all-conference selection of her career. She was an honorable mention in 2006 as a freshman, then earned first-team recognition in 2007. Forbes is a first-timer on the All-SLC list. She has played 14 games with 12 starts, primarily as a defender.
The Ladyjacks will begin play in the Southland Conference Tournament Thursday in Natchitoches, La. SFA (9-8-1, 6-2-1 SLC) finished tied for second in the Southland and earned the No. 3 seed in this weekend's tournament. The Ladyjacks will take on No. 6 McNeese State Thursday at 4:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to meet No. 2 Southeastern Louisiana in Friday's semifinals.
