FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Mitch Ownbey and Amy Shackelford were each named Southland Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, giving SFA a clean sweep of the awards for the first time this season. Ownbey and Shackelford led their respective teams to victory in the Florida State Invitational on Saturday.
Ownbey guided the Lumberjacks to a team title behind the first cross country victory of his collegiate career. He won the 8,000-meter race with a personal-best time of 24:50, leading an SFA sweep of the top three individual slots. The 'Jacks won the race by a 45-point margin.
In the women's race, Shackelford took second place, leading the Ladyjacks to a 10-point margin of victory. She posted a time of 17:48 on the 5,000-meter course, just seven seconds off the leader's pace.
The Southland awards are the first such honors for either Ownbey or Shackelford. By capturing both the men's and women's honors, SFA becomes just the second team in the conference to take both awards in the same week.
SFA's next scheduled competition is the Southland Conference Championships in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Oct. 31.
