NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team will open the 2009 indoor season Friday when they travel to Houston, Texas, to compete in the Leonard Hilton Invitational. The meet will take place at the Bill Yeoman Fieldhouse, and will be hosted by the University of Houston.
SFA returns a ton of young talent that saw success during the 2008 indoor season. The Ladyjacks return six all-conference athletes, and two defending conference champions from last year's squad. Junior thrower Frednisha Marshall headlines a youthful group of Ladyjacks that has only one senior on the roster. Marshall was a three-time SLC Athlete of the Week selection last season who set a school and conference record in the weight throw. Marshall won the event, and earned all-conference honors in the shot put, to earn SLC Outstanding Field Athlete honors following the meet. Pole vaulter Kelsea David, the squad's lone senior, also returns to defend her conference title in the event.
The 'Jacks are very similar on paper to the Ladyjacks' squad boasting a roster that contains only one senior. The SFA men return five all-conference athletes, and a conference champion from last year's team. Standout weight thrower Matt Langdon leads the group. Langdon recorded a conference record of 62-2.25 to win the weight throw and earn SLC Outstanding Field Athlete honors.
The Leonard Hilton Invitational is one of five indoor meets prior to the Southland Conference Indoor Championships, which are scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20 through Saturday, Feb. 21 in Houston. SFA will back in action Friday, Jan. 23 when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Razorback Invitational.
