NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The fall 2008 semester provided many athletic highlights for the Stephen F. Austin Athletics Department. Not to be overshadowed by the success on the field, SFA student-athletes also stood out in the classroom posting a 2.866 grade point average.
"We are very proud of our student-athletes and their success in the classroom," said SFA Director of Athletics Robert Hill. "The challenges they face with travel, practice and competition and still perform at this level in the classroom shows their commitment and hard work extends beyond the competitive arena."
Forty percent of all scholarship athletes (260) achieved a fall grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Among the 260 student-athletes who achieved at least a 3.0 GPA, 17 recorded perfect 4.0 grade point averages. The Ladyjack tennis team was the top performer with a 3.74-team grade point average. Every member of the squad recorded a 3.0, or better, grade point average for the fall semester. The Ladyjack soccer team was next with a 3.18 grade point average, which included 65 percent of the team earning a 3.0 or better.
The SFA football team accomplished one of the brighter turnarounds of the semester. Not only did the 'Jacks make remarkable strides on the gridiron, but they showed improvement in the classroom as well. The football team's grade point average of 2.72, which is the team's highest in several years, included more than 33 percent of the players reaching the 3.0 plateau.
