NACOGDOCHES - Stephen F. Austin head track and field coach Phil Olson announced the hiring of Sean Lonergan Monday morning. Lonergan, who replaces Ta' Frias, takes over as SFA's new sprints and hurdles coach.
"We are ecstatic about the addition of Sean Lonergan to our staff," said Olson. "He brings a wealth of knowledge in all areas of track and field to our program. Sean is a highly motivated individual who will excite our team and generate a spirit of enthusiasm for success. I have known Sean and his wife, Therese, for many years now as both their children, Katie and Cookie, were Ladyjack track and field athletes. They have entrusted their children to our program, and we are excited that now they are the ones joining our track and field family."
Lonergan comes to SFA from the high school ranks where he has left a paper trail of success. He spent the previous four seasons at Denton Guyer High School where he served as the boys' head track and field coach. Lonergan guided Guyer to its first district title, while the mile relay team was a state medalist.
Lonergan began his coaching career at Stephenville High School in 1995 as an assistant football coach. Two years later he was handed the reins to the girls track and field program, guiding his troops to four district titles over the next six seasons.
During his time in the high school ranks, Lonergan has produced several state finalists, as well as athletes who have continued their careers at the collegiate level, including daughters Katie and Colleen Lonergan, who played a major role in the Ladyjacks three Southland Conference titles.
