FRISCO, Texas - The Lumberjack baseball team had four players - Erich Lehmann, Adam Bosley, Zach Gardner and Justin Roland - named to the Capital One/Southland Conference All-Academic second team on Tuesday, the most players the `Jacks have placed on the team since bringing baseball back. The four-player total was tied with Central Arkansas for the most named to the team.
Lehmann became the first All-Academic selection for the program with his selection in 2007 and followed that up with another selection in 2008. He opened the year as a starter but evolved into a very reliable reliever as the season advanced, picking up three saves in the season's final two months. He was also second on the team in innings pitched and picked up 56 strikeouts in those 71.1 innings, as opposed to only 19 walks. For his career he only averages allowing 1.75 walks per nine innings, which is the best ever at SFA, as is his 18 career wins.
Bosley was the baseball winner of the Murray Shaw Academic Award at SFA's annual Champions Dinnerthe everyday first baseman for the `Jacks until going down with an injury against Texas A&M, but not after he had put up career bests in multiple categories. He drew five walks in a single game against Sacred Heart, just one shy of the NCAA single game record, and even mashed his first career home run against Northwestern State. He finished with six multi-hit games and was second on the team with a .434 on base percentage.
Gardner started 40 games for the `Jacks in center field and had multiple hits in four of the first five games of the year for SFA. He was honored at Champions Dinner in April as the Dick Wright Award , which is given to the athlete that exhibits desire, determination and dedication and holds a 3.62 GPA in Finance. Gardner will enter his season chasing just 17 hits shy of tying Steven Hill for the all-time hits lead at the school. He also ranks in the top 10 in stolen bases, runs and triples for his career.
Roland is the lone senior on the all-academic squad after blossoming in his final season as a Lumberjack. The Rockwall, Texas, native became the everyday third baseman for the `Jacks midway through the season and earned honorable mention All-SLC honors. He was fourth on the team with a .320 batting average and third with a .425 on base percentage. Roland also cranked his first two home runs of his career in back-to-back series against Texas State and Texas-Arlington and finished school with a 3.13 GPA in Liberal Studies and Social Studies.
