NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin baseball team has added another pair of names to their signee list after Tanner Hines and Brett Rogers each signed National Letters of Intent to play for the `Jacks next season.
Hines is a shortstop that comes to Nacogdoches from juco powerhouse San Jacinto College, earning all-conference honors for the Gators as a sophomore in 2008. A local product - originally from Hudson High School just outside of Lufkin - he hit .348 in 51 games for San Jacinto last year, leading his squad to a No. 6 national ranking in the year's final NJCAA national poll.
He is also a proven threat on the basepaths, having stolen 37 bases in 41 attempts over the last two years, and has not been an easy out having only fanned 22 times in 233 at-bats last season.
Selected in the 44th round of the 2006 draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates out of high school, Hines elected to forego that selection and enroll at San Jacinto as a freshman in 2007; then, as an underclassman, he hit at a .312 clip with a home run and 27 RBI to lead the Gators to a third-place finish at the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.
While at Hudson High School, he was an all-state selection for former Lumberjack pitcher Glen Kimble and led the Hornets to the Class 3A regional finals in 2005, and the regional semifinals in 2006.
Rogers was named District 5-4A Pitcher of the Year in 2008 for Wichita Falls Rider High School in leading the Raiders to the state playoffs. The right-hander posted outstanding numbers as a senior, going 5-4 with a 1.87 ERA and 99 strikeouts. He only walked seven batters on the year, holding opponents to a .169 batting average in 67 1/3 innings on the hill.
Also a second team all-district selection as a junior, Rogers doubled as a shortstop for Rider and hit .318 with 10 doubles and a pair of home runs in 2008, committing only seven errors in over 200 innings on the field.
Rogers is a well-rounded student-athlete as well, and is scheduled to graduate from high school with a four-year GPA of 3.67. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the student council.
