LAKE CHARLES, La. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team took two of three games in its midweek Southland Conference series with McNeese State by capturing a 9-6 win Thursday in the third game. The win improves SFA to 17-12 on the season and 4-2 in SLC play with series wins in both its conference sets so far.
A day after blasting three home runs in an 8-1 win over McNeese, the Ladyjacks used a five-run fourth inning that included a grand slam to take control, then got three runs in the sixth to set the final score after McNeese had tied the score at six with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
SFA opened with a run in the third inning, when Moriah Davis scored on an error following a base knock by Jessica Tullos. The Cowgirls answered with a single run in the bottom half, but SFA rang up a five spot in the top of the fourth, all five runs coming with two out.
After the first two batters were retired, Harper reached on an error, and Davis scored her with a double to left field. Tullos singled, then advanced behind Davis on the throw, giving the Ladyjacks runners at second and third. Briana Bishop drew a walk to load the bases, then Ashley Struchtemeyer homered to left field to give SFA a 6-1 advantage.
McNeese State added two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to tie the score, but SFA found the final answer with a three-run sixth inning. Davis led off with a single, then two straight walks loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Kari Hugie lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Davis. The next batter, Kim Daley, doubled to left-center, scoring two runs.
Davis was 3-for-4 in the game, and Tullos and Struchtemeyer each recorded two hits in the game.
Freshman Monika Covington started and went three-and-two-thirds innings, before giving way to classmate Lauren Luetge (6-3), who earned the win. Luetge allowed no earned runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Covington was touched for three runs on six hits and also recorded two strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks begin a three-game home series against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Saturday in Nacogdoches.
