NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA Ladyjack softball team blasted five home runs off of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as they swept a double-header on Saturday by scores of 11-0 (5 innings) and 8-4.
The first game saw the Ladyjacks (19-12, 6-2) ride an early wave of offense against Islanders starter Larissa Martin. After SFA took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, the bats came alive with a pair of three-run home runs in the second by Benet Higgs and Briana Bishop to give the Ladyjacks a comfortable 8-0 lead through two innings.
Freshman Monika Covington surfed through the Islander (12-13, 5-6) lineup, getting the complete game win - her 10th of the season - while only allowing six Islanders to reach base in her time in the circle.
Higgs finished game one with a perfect three-for-three performance that included two doubles and five RBI. Bishop Also added a pair of hits and five RBI of her own.
Game two saw the Ladyjacks have to work a little harder for the win as the Islanders touched up Lauren Luetge for three runs in the top of the fourth after the `Jacks had opened up a 3-0 lead of their own in the second. SFA had used three doubles in the second frame off of Martin to grab the lead.
After the Islanders had tied things up, however, SFA wasted no time flipping the power switch as Karie Hugie and Kim Daley delivered back-to-back home runs in the bottom half of the innings to push home three runs and give SFA a lead that they would not give back.
Hugie only allowed one run on two hits in picking up her second win of the year in relief, while Martin took her second loss of the day.
The Ladyjacks finish the series with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Sunday with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
