NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The SFA baseball team kicks off the home season today with a 3:00 p.m. start against Houston Baptist at Jaycees Field.
The 'Jacks and the Huskies will play again on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. in the final game of the two-game set.
The 'Jacks are 1-2 after sandwiching a pair of one-run losses around a dominating 9-3 win over UT-Pan American this weekend at the Al Ogletree Classic in Edinburg, Texas. Senior transfer Matt Whatley had a breakout weekend as a Lumberjack, going 6-for-11 at the plate, including a home run, two doubles and five RBI. With the addition of four walks, he reached base 10 of the 15 times he stepped to the plate.
Houston Baptist is 6-4 on the season after finishing third in the NAIA World Series a year ago, but has not touched the field since Feb. 12 when it was swept in a double-header by Northwood. The Husky lineup is topped by Andrew Taccolini, who has started off the season with a .485 average with three home runs and a dozen RBI in 10 games. Through 10 games the Huskies have swung the bats exceptionally well, sporting a team batting average of .343 with 14 home runs.
Admission is free for all games at Jaycees Field, but the game can also be followed via Gametracker at sfajacks.com. After the short home stint, the 'Jacks will be back on the road this weekend when it travels to Waco, Texas, for the QTI Baylor Classic where they will face Illinois, Illinois-Chicago and Baylor.
