FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin center Matt Kingsley was named Monday the Southland Conference Player of the Week, according to an announcement by league officials. This marks the third such honor of Kingsley's career but his first of the 2008-09 season.
The senior from Houston, Texas, scored a career-high 33 points in a 73-59 win against Jackson State last week and wound up averaging 23 points over two games. Kingsley hit 15-of-16 (.938) shots from the floor against the Tigers, registering a career-best for both field goals and field goal percentage. He opened the game with a 12-for-12 performance in the first period and went to the locker room with 25 points.
Kingsley pulled down six rebounds against Jackson State. He then scored 13 points and grabbed two boards in just 15 minutes of action against Texas Wesleyan on Saturday, as SFA rolled to a 92-42 verdict. Kingsley also recorded two assists, a block and a steal for the week.
Kingsley is currently second on the team and ranks fifth in the SLC in scoring with 16.3 points per game. His 33-point effort against Jackson State is the top single-game total in the Southland this season. Kingsley earned one SLC Player of the Week honor last season, after scoring 16 points with six rebounds in SFA's upset win at Oklahoma.
The Lumberjacks will be back in action this weekend when they head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Invitational. SFA will take on North Dakota State in a 5 p.m. game Friday, followed up by a Saturday date against either Drake or Georgia Southern, with the time to be determined.
