NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Shelly Swendig and Laurel Kuepker were each named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI volleyball team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America on Thursday.
The pair make up two of seven Southland Conference players that were named to one of the three teams that honor student-athletes for their accomplishments both on and off the court. SFA was the only SLC school to have multiple players named to one of the three teams, joining Oklahoma and the University of Texas as the only three schools with more than one player honored.
To be eligible players had to be of significant contribution to their teams, be at least a sophomore in eligibility and carry a 3.30 or higher GPA.
Swendig is a two-time Academic All-SLC selection, being named to the first team last season. The senior ranks in the top 10 in the SLC with a .287 attack percentage and is second on the team in kills with a 2.56 per set average. Swendig carries a 3.83 GPA and is double majoring in political science and international studies.
The honor is the first for Kuepker in her first year of eligibility for the squad. The LaPorte, Ind., native currently holds a perfect 4.0 GPA in liberal studies while also leading the Southland Conference in digs. Kuepker has earned SLC Defensive Player of the Week four times this season, the most recent coming on Monday and placing her in elite company as one of only seven players to receive the honor at least four times in a single season.
With their selections both Swendig and Kuepker will be included on the ballot for Academic All-America honors in December.
