FRISCO, Texas - Three Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks have been named to the 2008 All-Southland Conference Soccer Teams, announced Tuesday by league officials. Seniors Amanda Lackey, Jessica Cotton and Amanda Alders each made the 22-player squad with junior Megan Cash earning a spot on the honorable mention list.
Lackey and Cotton were each named First-Team All-SLC, while Alders was selected to the second team. This marks the second straight year for Lackey and Cotton to land spots on the first team, while Alders takes all-conference honors for the fourth consecutive season. SFA has had at least two players named to the first team in each of the last five seasons.
Lackey, a defensive midfielder from Humble, Texas, is making her third career appearance on the All-SLC team. She has started 16 of 17 games for SFA this season and plays a key role in a Ladyjack defense that has recorded six shutouts, including four straight to end the regular season. Lackey also has two goals to her credit, giving her 10 for her career.
Cotton is another key component to a Ladyjack defense that has held opponents to 21 goals, the second-best total in program history. Cotton has now been a part of the top three defensive teams in SFA soccer history. She has been credited with two assists this season. This year's all-conference honor is the second for Cotton, a Pearland, Texas, native.
Alders, a forward from Colleyville, Texas, finished the season tied for the team lead in goals with six. She ended the season in the top 10 among SLC players in points (17), goals and assists. Her five assists lead the Ladyjacks and are a career-high. Alders is making her fourth straight appearance on the All-SLC team. She is just the third player in program history to earn a first- or second-team selection in four consecutive seasons. SFA's all-time leader in points and goals was a first-team choice in 2005 and 2006 and has been named to the second team each of the last two seasons.
Cash is making her second appearance on the All-SLC list in two seasons on campus. She was a second-team selection in 2007. Her six goals are tied for the team lead, and she ranks second on the squad with 13 total points. The Austin, Texas, native's offensive numbers likely would have been better had injuries in the backfield not forced her to spend the second half of the conference season playing as a defender.
The Ladyjacks finished the 2008 regular season with a 9-7-1 overall record and tied for second in the SLC with a 6-2-1 league mark. SFA goes into the SLC Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Ladyjacks open tournament play Thursday with a first-round game against No. 5 Southeastern Louisiana. The contest is scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start. All games will be played at the Ward 3 Sports Complex in Lake Charles, La.
