FRISCO, Texas - Sophomore libero Laurel Kuepker was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season the conference office announced on Monday for her efforts against Texas State and UTA last week.
The honor makes Kuepker only the seventh player in SLC history to win the honor four ore more times in a single season, with former Ladyjack Stephanie Figgers being the last to do it when she won it six times in 2006.
Overall, SFA has picked up six weekly honors in the SLC this season which is the most of any school in the conference. Five of those have been defensive honors with MC Bottles also having won a weekly honor earlier in the season.
The LaPorte, Ind., native kept a hold on her lead in the SLC digs race by averaging nearly five digs per set in two matches last week for the Ladyjacks. The majority of those came in a five-set heartbreaker at Texas State when she kept 31 balls alive, the second time this season she has gone over 30 digs in a match. It was the third-highest five-set dig total of the year in the SLC, with Kuepker already holding the top spot with her 36-dig effort at SMU on Sept. 9.
Kuepker currently leads the league with a 4.54 digs per set average this season.
SFA will be back in action on Thursday against Northwestern, the first of two home matches this week that will wrap up the home slate for the year for the Ladyjacks. SFA will then take on Central Arkansas on Saturday in what will serve as Senior Night for SFA's senior class of Lauren Railey and Shelly Swendig.
