NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks racked up 480 yards of total offense Saturday night but it wasn't enough to stop Central Arkansas who recorded a 49-41 victory at Homer Bryce Stadium. The loss drops SFA to 0-3 all-time against Central Arkansas and 4-7 on the season. The `Jacks are now 2-4 in Southland Conference play, while the Bears remain atop the league standings with a 9-2 overall mark, and a 5-1 SLC record.
SFA jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead when sophomore Cornell Tarrant recorded a two-yard run for the first score of the game. The `Jacks built their advantage to 10 points, 17-7, when Tarrant tacked on his second TD run of the night. Tarrant's second scoring run went for 16 yards.
Despite the early momentum, the Bears would rally to take a one-point lead into the locker room. The Bears Brent Grimes gave UCA a 28-27 lead when he carried the ball from four yards out for the score. The score was one of a school-record five touchdowns on the night for Grimes as he finished the game with 36 carries for 145 yards, and eight catches for 74 yards.
Trailing by eight points, the Lumberjacks got the ball at their own 29 yard line with just over 7:30 remaining in the contest. Moses drove the Lumberjacks down to the UCA two yard line before the drive stalled out. On fourth down, sophomore Jeremy Moses lofted the ball in the air looking for junior Contrevious Parks in the corner of the end zone, but the ball was batted away UCA's Phillip Johnson. The Bears were able to take the ball and run out the final 4:16 on the clock.
Moses finished the night completing 28-of-47 (.563) passes for 421 yards and three touchdowns. He connected with nine different receivers on the night, led by senior Dominique Edison and junior Duane Brooks who each hauled in six passes. Edison finished the night 72 receiving yards and one touchdown, while Brooks ended the game with 66 receiving yards. Parks hauled in three passes for 102 yards and one score.
Five different Lumberjacks finished the night with double-figure tackles. Sophomore Jabara Williams led SFA with 18 tackles. Freshman Derrick Choice and sophomore Terrance Nurse each added 13.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Nov. 22, when they host Northwestern State in the 2008 regular-season finale. The annual "Battle for the Chief" is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
