NACOGDOCHES - Senior receiver Dominique Edison closed out his SFA career by becoming the Southland Conference's single-season leader in touchdown receptions. The San Augustine native set the record with 2:12 remaining in the contest, but it was Northwestern State that came away with the biggest prize. The Demons recorded a 34-24 victory over SFA Saturday night to maintain possession of Chief Caddo for a second consecutive season. The Lumberjacks close out the season with a 4-8 (.333) overall record and a 2-5 (.286) conference mark.
The Demons wasted no time in denting the scoreboard. Less than 90 seconds into the contest Gary Riggs picked off a Jeremy Moses pass and took it 39 yards for the touchdown. The lead was short lived, as SFA wasted no time tying the game back up. Moses guided the Lumberjacks right back down the field less than two minutes later. Junior receiver Contrevious Parks capped a seven-play, 72-yard drive with his one-yard touchdown run.
The very next play would set the tone for the whole game. Northwestern State's Calvin Stoker hit Dudley Guice for a 74-yard scoring strike that gave the Demons a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Every time SFA got close, Northwestern State always responded with an answer never allowing SFA to get any closer than seven points in the second half.
After torching the Lumberjack defense for more than 200 rushing yards last season, SFA held all-conference running back Byron Lawrence in check, surrendering 26 yards on 11 plays, but Northwestern State hurt SFA through the air. The Demons recorded 368 of their 489 yards of total offense in the passing game. Northwestern State quarterback John Hundley finished the night completing 29-of-44 passes for 294 yards.
The Lumberjack offense never seemed to get in rhythm finishing the night with 353 yards of total offense. Moses completed 22-of-44 passes for 241 yards, but was plagued with four interceptions. It marked the first time in the last four games that Moses has not thrown for at least 300 yards, and the first time in the last 11 games that he has not completed at least two touchdown passes.
Sophomore running back Cornell Tarrant recorded another strong outing just missing the century mark. Tarrant carried the ball 10 times for 90 yards and one touchdown. Junior Duane Brooks led all SFA receivers with seven receptions for 83 yards. Senior Tyrell Williams caught five passes for 50 yards.
The Lumberjack defense finished the night having five players record double-figure tackles. Sophomore Jabara Williams led the way with 21 tackles. Junior Cory Barlow added 14.
