FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Amanda Lackey was named Tuesday the Southland Conference Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, according to an announcement released by league officials. Lackey's honor is the first of the season for her but marks the second straight week for a Ladyjack to earn one of the conference's weekly awards.
Lackey, a defensive midfielder, scored the game-winning goal in SFA's SLC-opening 1-0 win at Southeastern Louisiana on Friday. It was her second goal of the season and helped secure the first home loss for the Lions in nearly two years. The senior helped hold Southeastern to just two shots on goal in the game.
In Sunday's game at Nicholls, the score was not as tight, but the defense was nearly as secure. Lackey and the Ladyjacks held the Colonels to eight shots on goal, five of which were recorded in the second period, after SFA had jumped out to a 5-0 first-half lead. The game ended with a 6-1 Ladyjack victory, moving the team to 2-0-0 in SLC play.
SFA (5-5-0) will be back in action Friday, when the Ladyjacks travel to Huntsville, Texas, to take on Sam Houston State. The Bearkats enter the game with a seven-game win streak. Friday's game is set for a 7 p.m. start.
