NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack volleyball team could not hold shut the door on the Lamar Cardinals on Saturday, falling to LU for the second straight season 3-2 (25-15, 15-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-10).
The loss keeps the Cardinals (10-8, 8-1 SLC) in a tie with Texas State for the lead in the SLC, while SFA (16-5, 7-2) falls a game out of the top spot.
Lauren Railey hit for 16 kills on the night on .302 swinging, adding 10 digs as well. Amber Williams-Roberts continued to do an outstanding job of filling in for Shelly Swendig, adding in a dozen kills with only three misfires in 31 tries and 10 digs for her second double-double in as many weeks.
The Cards dropped in five service aces in the first set and hit .393 in rolling to a quick 1-0 lead, before the tables turned in the second frame. SFA held LU to .091 hitting in the second set, picking up 10-point wins in each of the next two stanzas to come just one set away from a win.
But LU, who shared the SLC title with SFA last season, had just enough firepower behind outside hitters Meagan Adams and Kaci Brewer who had 16 kills apiece for the match. Lamar hit .433 in the fourth set and .345 in the deciding set for the win.
Paloma Buckner saw her first significant playing time of the season, dishing out 41 assists and adding three kills in four sets of work. Laurel Kuepker added 14 digs and MC Bottles chipped in with seven kills and four blocks on the night.
The road for SFA gets no easier next week as they hit the I-35 corridor to take on Texas State and UT-Arlington on Thursday and Saturday.
