NACOGDOCHES - It was a game that was billed as two explosive offenses meeting at Homer Bryce Stadium. By the end of the day, Texas State walked away with the victory, while the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks suffered a 62-21 setback and their first conference loss of the season. The loss drops SFA to 4-4 (.500) on the season, and a 2-1 (.667) in Southland Conference play.
The offenses didn't disappoint early in the contest. The Bobcats scored their first touchdown on a 71-yard pass play from Bradley George to Mishak Rivas only 18 seconds into the contest. The Lumberjacks answered 54 seconds later when Jeremy Moses hooked up with Dominique Edison for a 76-yard touchdown pass. But that would be all the points SFA would score until three minutes into the second quarter, while the Bobcats rattled off 20 unanswered to take a commanding 27-7 first-half lead.
Although SFA has been in similar territory in its first two SLC games trailing by as many as 28 to Southeastern Louisiana, and 19 last week at Nicholls, Texas State was unwilling to let the `Jacks off the hook. SFA tacked on its second touchdown of the game when Tyrone Ross carried the ball from six yards out, but the `Jacks went into the locker room trailing 41-14.
It was more of the same in the second half as Texas State scored the first 21 points of the half. The Lumberjacks closed out the scoring with a 40-yard pass from Moses to Edison.
The Bobcats racked up 678 yards of total offense, including 429 yards through the air. The Lumberjacks finished the game with 363 yards of total offense, but were held to 35 on the ground.
Sophomore Jeremy Moses completed 15-of-36 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns, while his counterpart, George, completed 25 passes for 418 yards and four scores. Edison led all SFA receivers with four receptions for 133 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday, Nov. 1, when they travel to Huntsville, Texas, to take on Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from Bowers Stadium, and will be televised on the SLC Television Network.
