NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Texas State made the most of its only corner kick of the second half with a goal in the 57th minute and went on to take a 1-0 win over Stephen F. Austin Sunday afternoon in Southland Conference soccer action.
The SFA loss comes on the heels of Friday's 3-1 defeat against UTSA, marking the first time since the 2000 season for SFA to drop consecutive home games in conference play. The loss is the just the third home defeat against an SLC opponent in the last six seasons.
With the win, Texas State maintains its place at the top of the league standings, moving to 9-3-3 overall and 5-0-1 in league play. The Ladyjacks saw their record fall to 6-7-0 with a 3-2-0 mark against SLC foes.
The lone goal in the contest came at the 56:16 mark. Following a shot on goal by SFA's Jessica Cotton on a free kick, Texas State quickly flipped the field and pushed the ball into Ladyjack territory. The Bobcats' Lauren Lewis fired a shot on goal that SFA 'keeper Courtney Bauder deflected, but the carom bounced away, setting up a corner opportunity for Texas State.
Andrea Grifo took the corner and served a high ball into the box. Lewis was able to leap and head it into the net from close range, giving her team the only goal it would need.
SFA registered four shots on goal -- three by junior Megan Cash -- and four corner kicks down the stretch, but couldn't find the net.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie in the opening period, when the Ladyjacks out-shot Texas State, 7-5, but failed to record a shot on goal. All five SFA shots on goal came in the second period. For the game, the Ladyjacks held a 17-11 edge in shots taken and a 7-6 advantage in corner kick opportunities.
Bauder (6-6-0) finished with three saves in 90 minutes of action.
SFA will resume SLC play on Friday, Oct. 24, when the Ladyjacks begin their final road trip of the regular season with a game at Central Arkansas. The contest is set to start at 4 p.m. from Conway, Ark. SFA will follow that up with a game at Northwestern State on Sunday. That match-up is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. from Natchitoches, La.
