FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin sophomore Dennis Yeats has been named the Southland Conference Cross Country Male Student-Athlete of the Week, according to an announcement Tuesday by league officials. The honor is the first of Yeats' career but marks the second consecutive week for an SFA athlete to take a league accolade. Freshman Brittainy Robertson was named the Female Athlete of the Week last week.
Yeats won the honor by taking first place at Monday's SLC Pre-Conference Championship meet at Piney Woods Country Club in Nacogdoches. He turned in a strong performance on the challenging 8,000-meter course that will host next month's SLC Championships. Yeats snapped the tape with a time of 25:59, leading the Lumberjacks to a sweep of the top four individual slots and the team title.
The win was Yeats' first as a collegiate competitor. The sophomore from Terrell, Texas, has been the first Lumberjack across the finish line at all three meets this season.
Yeats will return to action with his teammates on Nov. 3, when SFA hosts the SLC Championships.
