NACOGDOCHES, Texas - "100-Percent Cotton" is the weekly blog of senior defender Jessica Cotton. The blog gives fans a look at the inner workings of the SFA soccer program and is updated weekly on Tuesdays.
A three-game win streak is a great way to start off conference! We have even snapped our road game curse, with those first three wins coming on the road.
Our week started Tuesday, and again we had a hard practice, but it was nowhere near a "Terrible Tuesday." Instead, at the end of practice we did what was called the "Circle of Death." We all stood shoulder to shoulder in a circle with our arms above our heads. We had to pass soccer balls and a medicine ball around without dropping our elbows below our ears. What a shoulder and lower back workout.
Wednesday was also a tough practice but we did not feel as tired from the practice before. We did a lot of transition games that went along with the formation that Sam Houston plays. By becoming comfortable with Sam's formation, we were given an extra advantage for Friday. Thursday, we had a light practice consisting of skill work and small-sided scrimmages. It was a good week of practice, and we felt very prepared for Friday's game.
We left Nacogdoches around 3:00 Friday afternoon, and had Schlotzky's waiting for us on the bus. It is always a great start to a bus ride, when we have food right there for us! The bus ride was short, compared to what we were used to. We arrived in Huntsville shortly after five, and headed straight for the field. For about fifteen minutes, we shook and stretched out our legs while checking out the field surface. Afterward, we headed back to the bus until it was time to warm up.
The game started at seven that evening, and we got out to an early lead. Megan Cash scored in the fifth minute. Later in the half, she scored again and we went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. We knew Sam Houston would come out firing in the second half, so we had to come out and match that intensity. It was a tough fight, and although Sam scored a goal that was unlucky on our part, we held off their attack and won the game, 2-1.
Now, after having Saturday and Sunday off, we are beginning a tough week of practice to get prepared for a challenging set of games against UTSA and Texas State this weekend.
