After recording a strong start to the 2008 indoor season in Houston, the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team will look continue their momentum Friday in Arkansas. SFA will travel to Fayetteville, Ark., Friday for the Razorback Invitational. The two-day event will last through Saturday.
"The meet this week will be a good challenge for both of our squads," said Olson. "It will be the first time this year that we will be traveling our whole squad to a meet. There will be a lot of big-time talent in Arkansas, and it will be a good measuring stick of where we stand against schools from the Big 12 and SEC."
The meet will consist of a 42-team field that will include Houston, Baylor, Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, North Texas, SMU and Tulsa. SFA will be one of only two Southland Conference schools at the event. Northwestern State will also be competing in the Razorback Invitational.
SFA jumped out to a quick start to the 2008 season with a strong showing at the Leonard Hilton Invitational last week in Houston. SFA brought home three individual titles from that meet including a clean sweep of the weight throw competition from a couple of sophomores.
Frednisha Marshall won the women's weight throw by recording a throw of 60-6.50. The throw was not only a personal best for Marshall, but it also set a new school and Southland Conference record as well. Marshall was named SLC Female Track and Field Athlete of the Week for her performance. She concluded the meet by recording a fourth-place finish in the shot put.
Completing the sweep of the event was classmate who Matt Langdon recorded a mark of 57-0.25 to take home the men's individual title. SFA's third individual title came from the SLC's reigning indoor long jump champion Sumbo Adeniran. Picking up in 2008 where he left on in 2007, Adeniran won the long jump with a mark of 23-6.00.
The multi events will begin Friday at noon, and field events will get under way at 3 p.m. with the men's and women's weight throw. The track events begin at 6:30 p.m. with the running of the 200-meter dash.
SFA will be back in action Saturday, Feb. 1, when they travel to Houston, Texas, for the Houston Invitational and Multis meet. The will be a two-day event.
