
Four Home Runs Lead SFA Past YSU

NACOGDOCHES - For the first time since the return of baseball, four Lumberjacks hit home runs in a single as Stephen F. Austin defeated Youngstown State, 12-1, Saturday afternoon. Steven Hill, Noel Trevino, Jeremy Arterburn, and Kevin Crabtree all hit long balls for SFA as the Lumberjacks overall record improved to 5-8 on the season. It was the second straight win for SFA and the third in four games. The Penguins fell to 0-2 on the year.
The Lumberjacks scored early as Jeff Brewer crossed the plate in the bottom of the first inning. Brewer, who led off with a single to right center, proceeded to steal second base before scoring when Hill put a base hit through the left side for the early 1-0 lead.
In its next at-bat, SFA tacked on four more runs. With two outs, Chris Smith hit a double to left center. Smith and Kevin Croft, who was hit by a pitch, advanced a base when Brewer was issued a walk. With the bases loaded, Trevino knocked a grand slam over the left field fence to the put SFA up 5-0. The home run was Trevino's second of the year and the Lumberjacks' first grand slam this season.
The Lumberjacks went up 8-0 in the third inning. Kevin Crabtree reached on a double down the left field line and scored when Jeremy Arterburn homered to left field. It was Arterburn's first home run of his Lumberjack career. Justin Long followed the home run with a triple down to left field and scored when Smith grounded out to first base.
The Penguins scored their sole run in their half of the fifth inning. Brian Hamrick hit a one-out base hit and then stole second. He reached third on a John Koehnlein single to shortstop and scored on a single hit by Josh Page.
Two more home runs were in store for the Lumberjacks. In the fifth inning, Crabtree hit a lead-off solo shot to left center and Hill added his home run in the sixth. Trevino had led off the inning with a base hit before scoring his second run of the game on Hill's second homer of the season. Hill's two-run blast gave SFA the 12-1 lead.
SFA's starting pitching once again had a strong showing as Jared Schrom pitched five complete innings, giving up six hits and one run. He struck out five with no walks. It is the third time in four games that a Lumberjack starter does not allow a walk. Schrom earned his first win of the season to move his record to 1-1.
At the plate, Crabtree had four hits in five at-bats, including two doubles and a home run. He had three RBI and scored one run. Hill and Trevino followed with three hits apiece. Hill was 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Trevino scored two runs, led the game with four RBI, and has hit safely in his last seven games.
The Lumberjacks will look to sweep the Penguins Sunday at Jaycees Field. Game time has been moved from 1 p.m. to 11 a.m.
