Lumberjacks Outlast Texas State

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior guard Corwin Ragland missed the front end of a one-and-one free throw opportunity Thursday night that would have given Stephen F. Austin the lead in the closing moments of regulation. But Ragland found his stroke when it mattered most - in overtime. He scored four points in the extra period, including the final Lumberjack free throw, as SFA outlasted Texas State for a 78-75 overtime win in the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
Ragland knifed to the basket for a shot-clock-beating layup to break a 72-72 tie with 1:40 left in overtime. He was fouled on the play and knocked down the free throw to give SFA a three-point edge. After a missed shot by Texas State at the other end, Ragland dished the ball down low for a layup by junior forward Kyle Jacobs to put SFA ahead, 77-72, with 1:04 to play.
The Bobcats cut into the lead with a quick 3-pointer by Dylan Moseley, but Ragland was fouled in the backcourt on the ensuing possession and, this time, sank the first one-and-one shot to set the final margin. After a desperate 3-pointer by Texas State rattled off the rim, the Lumberjacks saw their season record improve to 15-10, as they broke a two-game slide. SFA is holding steady as the No. 3 team in the Southland Conference west with an 8-5 league mark.
Senior guard Keith Hardaway was sidelined by a minor injury during the late-game heroics, but not before he tallied a career-high 17 points. Hardaway came off the bench hot, hitting 7-of-9 from the field and 3-of-5 from 3-point range. The trio of triples tied a career-high for Hardaway.
Sophomore center Matt Kingsley was close behind with 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, despite missing significant time, due to early foul trouble. Sophomore forward Josh Alexander was also bitten by the foul bug, but managed to pour in 10 points - including a 3-pointer to start the overtime period - and just missed his sixth career double-double with a team-high nine rebounds.
Dylan Moseley scored 21 points to lead the Bobcats, and Brandon Thomas grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Texas State was hampered by 20 turnovers, miscues the Lumberjacks converted to19 points. SFA outscored the Bobcats, 12-2, in fast-break points.
The Lumberjacks will next take the floor on Saturday, when they travel to Arlington, Texas, to take on UT-Arlington. The game against the Mavericks is set for a 4 p.m. start in Texas Hall.
