ARLINGTON, Texas - Four Texas-Arlington players reached double figures in scoring Saturday, as the Mavericks knocked off Stephen F. Austin, 69-62, in Texas Hall. The loss moved SFA to 15-11 overall and 8-6 in Southland Conference play. The victory brought UTA (12-16, 7-8) within a game-and-a-half of third-place SFA in the SLC West standings.
Anthony Vereen scored a game-high 19 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead the Mavericks. Vereeen was one of two UTA players to record a double-double. Tommy Moffit scored 10 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Ro'ger Guignard and Larry Posey added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Senior center Antuane Miller led the Lumberjacks with 15 points and six rebounds. Trevor Guy was the only other SFA player to reach double figures. Guy scored 14 points -- three off his career-high -- and grabbed six boards.
The Lumberjacks played evenly with UTA everywhere except on the boards. The Mavericks posted a 42-29 edge in rebounding and knocked down 19 of their 27 attempts at the free throw line. SFA shot 48.1 percent from the field in the first half and went to the locker room down just a point, 35-34. But the Mavericks hit 50 percent from the floor after halftime and went 15-of-21 at the stripe to hold off the Lumberjacks.
SFA will next take the floor on Wednesday, Feb. 28, when the Lumberjacks hit the road to take on Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The game against the Islanders is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
