
'Jacks Take Third; Ladyjacks Fourth at SLC Indoors

HOUSTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up the final day of competition at the 2007 SLC Indoor Championships Saturday in Houston. The Lumberjacks scored 82.50 points to finish third behind champion Texas-San Antonio (114.50 points). The Ladyjacks scored 85.28 points to finish fourth behind champion Sam Houston State (135 points).
Freshman Josh Cruse got the SFA men out to a quick start Saturday winning the men's triple jump. Cruse recorded the victory with a jump of 49-10.50. Cruse's victory gives the 'Jacks a sweep of the jumps, with junior Justin Reyes winning the high jump and junior Sumbo Adeniran winning the long jump Friday.
Also earning all-conference honors for SFA on Saturday were junior Markeshia Edwards and freshman Kaitlyn Andrews in the shot put and freshman Chris Moody in the men's 400-meter dash. Andrews finished second in the shot with her toss of 48-2.75. Andrews' mark edged out Edwards who finished third overall (46-8.25). Moody recorded a third-place finish in the 400 meters crossing the finish line with a time of 48.80.
The Lumberjacks 4x400-meter relay team of Terry Rowe, Zach Ross, Stephon Rhea and Chris Moody closed out the meet by earning all-conference honors. The relay team recorded a time of 3:18.06 to finish second overall.
Senior Kenneth McKinley just missed all-conference in the men's shot put, with his toss of 54-4.75. McKinley's throw was good enough to finish fourth overall. Junior Johnny Thacker scored points for the Lumberjacks in the men's 60-meter dash. Thacker finished sixth overall with a time of 7.01.
The Ladyjacks were able to put up some big points in the pole vault placing four athletes in the top eight. Junior Laura Mikeska just missed All-SLC honors with her fourth-place finish (11-11.75). Mikeska finished just ahead of classmate Kristina Windham who cleared a height of 11-5.75 to finish fifth overall. Sophomores Ashley Dickeson and Kelsea David finished tied for eighth with a mark of 10-11.75.
Other SFA notables from Saturday's competition are senior LaKoa McKeever in the women's mile and junior Katrina Roundtree in the women's 400-meter dash. McKeever finished seventh overall with a time of 5:13.46. Roundtree also recorded a seventh-place finish in the 400 meters with her time of 57.27. Freshman Kyle Ketchersid also scored in his very first conference meet, finishing eighth in the heptathlon, scoring 4,239 points. Freshman Keith Mahipala finished sixth in the men's 3,000 meters with a time of 8:30.69. The Ladyjacks' 4x400-meter relay team recorded a seventh-place finish with their time of 4:00.94.
The SFA men and women open the outdoor season Wednesday, Mar. 7, at the Northwestern State Invitational in Natchitoches, La.
