NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Four of a Kind: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team is looking for its fourth straight victory Tuesday, when the 'Jacks host Southern in the first of two home games for the month of December. The contest is set for a 7 p.m. start from the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA enters the game with a 5-1 record and the winner three consecutive games. The Jaguars bring a 1-4 mark to the contest and are hoping to put a stop to their four-game losing streak.
Last Game: The Lumberjacks enjoyed their best shooting night of the season Saturday in an 82-67 victory at Jackson State. SFA hit 63 percent from the field, its best performance since shooting 65.2 percent in a win at Texas State last January. Junior center Matt Kingsley led the way, knocking down 11-of-15 from the floor for a game-high 26 points. Junior forward Josh Alexander posted his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Gerald Fonzie tied a career-best with 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including a career-high 5-for-8 effort from 3-point range. Sophomore point guard Eric Bell scored 13 points for his third straight double-digit scoring effort.
vs. Southern: SFA won its inaugural meeting with Southern last season, knocking off the Jaguars, 73-64, on the road. Southern was one of five first-time opponents for the Lumberjacks in the 2006-07 season.
The Jaguars: Southern won its season opener at SMU, 75-61, but has not found the win column since. The Jaguars (1-4) have dropped each of their last four games with all five contests this season coming on the road. Those losses include blowouts against Missouri and cross-town foe LSU, as well as a three-point defeat (84-81) at the hands of Paul Quinn.
The Coaches: SFA is led by head coach Danny Kaspar. Kaspar is in his eighth season at the helm for the Lumberjacks. He holds a record of 113-91 (.554) at SFA and has a 332-143 (.699) overall record in 16-plus seasons as a collegiate head coach. Southern is coached by Rob Spivery. In his fourth season with the Jaguars, Spivery is 30-47 (.390) at the school and 319-303 (.513) in 22 seasons overall.
Up Next: The Lumberjacks hit the road again for their second game of the season against a Big 12 opponent. SFA will travel to Norman, Okla., to take on the Sooners on Saturday, Dec. 8, in a 12:30 p.m. game. The Lumberjacks will then have a week off for final exams before heading west for a Dec. 15 game at San Diego. That contest is set for a 3 p.m. start.
