FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Josh Alexander has been named the Southland Conference Player of the Week, according to an announcement made by league officials Monday. The junior forward earned the third such honor of his career by leading SFA to a 56-50 win at San Diego on Saturday.
Alexander scored 22 points to pace the Lumberjacks against San Diego. He had 10 points at the break after hitting 2-for-3 from 3-point range in the opening period, but really heated up in the second half, when his team needed him most. After going to the bench with his fourth foul early in the second period, Alexander returned the floor at the four-minute mark and knocked down a pair of big threes. The first put the Lumberjacks ahead, 44-43, with 3:10 left, and the second, two possessions later, gave SFA a five-point lead -- its largest of the second half. Alexander finished 5-of-8 from 3-point range, a season-best from beyond the arc.
The win improved SFA to 8-1, tying the Lumberjacks' best start through nine games in the last 26 years. SFA has won six straight games, including four straight on the road. The Lumberjacks will be back in action Friday when they host Huston-Tillotson in a 7 p.m. game.
