FRISCO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin's Matt Kingsley has been named the Southland Conference Basketball Player of the Week, according to an announcement made Monday by the league office. This marks the second such honor of Kingsley's career. The junior center helped lead the Lumberjacks to two victories last week, including a huge 66-62 win over Oklahoma on Saturday.
Kingsley scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds in Saturday's game. He went 6-for-6 at the free throw line, including a crucial pair of foul shots with 17 seconds left that extended SFA's lead to 64-60. He also knocked down a jumper in the first half that erased Oklahoma's last lead of the game. The Houston, Texas, native added two blocked shots and an assist to his stat line before he was through.
The big game at Oklahoma gave Kingsley 13.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the week. He had 10 points and five rebounds in a foul-shortened performance against Southern on Tuesday. The Lumberjacks defeated the Jaguars, 56-39, in that game, marking the first time in four seasons for SFA to hold an opponent to fewer than 40 points.
Kingsley has hit double digits in scoring in all eight SFA games this season and leads the SLC with 18.6 points per game. His .578 field goal percentage ranks fifth in the conference. Kingsley won his first SLC Player of the Week award in January of last season.
The Lumberjacks are 7-1 on the season, matching their best start through eight games in 26 years. SFA's current five-game win streak is one shy of tying the Lumberjacks' season-best run of six straight wins last year. SFA has also won three straight non-conference road games for the first time since the 1984-85 season.
The Lumberjacks will return to action Saturday, Dec. 15, when they take on San Diego. The game against the Toreros is set for a 3 p.m. start.
