NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Shooting for Three: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team will try to put together its first three-game win streak of the season Saturday, when the Lumberjacks head to Jackson, Miss., to take on Jackson State. The game is set for a 4 p.m. tip from Williams Assembly Center. SFA brings a 4-1 record to the contest, while Jackson State enters the game at 1-6. In the teams' previous meeting this season, the Lumberjacks took a 70-55 victory.
Last Game: SFA put together perhaps its most complete game of the season last Saturday in defeating Northern Illinois on the road, 74-50. The Lumberjacks shot a season-best 54.4 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Huskies, 35-22. SFA led, 37-29, at the half and steadily pushed its lead in the second period until the final margin stretched to 24, the largest margin of victory this season. Junior forward Josh Alexander led SFA with 19 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore point guard Eric Bell scored 18 points and dished out 11 assists for his first career double-double.
vs. Jackson State: SFA has the chance to even its all-time record against the Tigers on Saturday. Jackson State currently holds a 3-2 edge in the young match-up, which began in 2001 with a Tiger win. SFA is 2-1 at home against Jackson State, including this season's 70-55 victory in Nacogdoches, but the Lumberjacks have yet to beat the Tigers on the road. SFA last played in Jackson in 2005, when the Tigers took a 68-64 victory.
The Tigers: Jackson State is 1-6 on the season entering Saturday's game. The Tigers dropped their first five games of the year before knocking off Iona College in tournament play in Las Vegas. Jackson State is coming off a 61-49 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Tuesday in the Tigers' first home game of the season.
The Coaches: SFA is under the direction of head coach Danny Kaspar. Kaspar is in his eighth season at the helm for the Lumberjacks. He holds a record of 112-91 (.552) at SFA and has a 331-143 (.698) overall record in 16-plus seasons as a collegiate head coach. Jackson State is coached by Tevester Anderson. Anderson is in his sixth season with the Tigers, where he has a record of 64-71 (.474). In nine-plus seasons as a collegiate head coach, Anderson is 167-123 (.576).
Up Next: The Lumberjacks return home to host Southern on Dec. 4. The game is set for a 7 p.m. start. SFA will then hit the road for a Dec. 8 game at Oklahoma, the Lumberjacks' second Big 12 opponent of the season. The contest against the Sooners is set for a 12:30 p.m. start.
