NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack Jessica Cotton has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team, according to an announcement made Friday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (the organization that sponsors the academic all-district and all-America teams). Cotton, a junior defender for the Ladyjacks, was named to the District 6 Third Team. She was one of only three Southland Conference athletes to make the all-district squad.
Cotton is a starter for an SFA defense that has held opponents to just 18 goals through 15 games. The Ladyjacks' 1.13 goals-against average is on pace to finish the season ranked second-best in program history. SFA has recorded four shutouts for the year and three in the last four games.
Cotton is no slouch at the offensive end of the field, either. She ranks fourth on the team in goals with three, including two game-winners. With only 12 shots to her credit this season, she has the best shot percentage on the team at .250.
The Pearland, Texas, native is an interdisciplinary studies major with a 3.68 grade-point average.
Cotton and the Ladyjacks (9-4-2, 5-1-1) enter this weekend's play as part of a three-team tie for first place in the SLC. SFA hosts Southeastern Louisiana Friday in a 7 p.m. match before wrapping up the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against Nicholls State.
