After rave reviews SFAJacks.com is bringing back the 2007 volleyball player's diary, this year with junior outside hitter Shelly Swendig.
This past week proved to be quite the bittersweet symphony, as we played for the conference championship, but we were also scheduled to be playing our last two home games of the season. Wednesday night we were up against UTA. We had a good crowd mosey on out, and I like to think that they helped us sweep the Mavs for the second time this season.
Friday, after practice, we had a few visitors come for a little clinic put on by the team. We split up into a few groups in order to teach some Girl Scouts the fundamentals of volleyball. I think the girls had fun, and learned something - although assuredly not from me, as I, for some reason am the most awkward person with children.
On Saturday, we set up shop to play our final regular season conference match - which was also, naturally, our last home match - against our arch-nemesis, the Bobcats of Texas State. Upon entering our locker room, we noticed that Ash, who was at her best friend's wedding, had plastered several inspirational signs on the wall and strewn balloons all over the floor. One sign even read "Rock and roll McDoland's." (which was supposed to be McDonald's)
The match commenced at the odd time of 4:00 p.m., which I presume was due to the senior day festivities. The games were pretty close, but we swept the `Cats for the first time in a few years. It is always great to beat Texas State, but this win also made us conference champs. Yes, I should mention that we are sharing the title with Lamar, but hey, we're all adults here, and sharing is just a part of life.
After the match, we had a reception for the seniors, where there were some delightful little weenies to nibble on while we mingled. I am not going to get too sentimental here, as the season is not over yet, but I cannot believe that was the last time I will play in the coliseum with those wonderful gals.
This weekend we go to San Antonio for the conference tournament, and I figure that while we are there, we might as well wreck some shop and win a few more games. For those that would like to attend, a bus is being provided by SFA that will be leaving at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Hotel rooms are being provided, and then the bus will leave to come back to Nac after the title match on Sunday, which is scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m.. If you are interested please contact our assistant Erin McClanahan at (936) 468-6244.
Word of the Week: Amalgamate - verb; combine or unite to form one organization or structure. Ex: Fans from near and far will amalgamate to cheer on the Ladyjacks at the Southland Conference Tournament this weekend.
