NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks enter the final weekend of the regular season with their sights set on a third Southland Conference championship in four years. SFA (9-4-2) is currently part of a three-team tie atop the league standings with a 5-1-1 SLC mark. McNeese State and Texas-San Antonio are the other two teams sharing the top spot. A few favorable bounces in those squads' games this weekend could leave SFA alone at the top and with the No. 1 seed in the SLC Tournament. But the Ladyjacks must first take care of business with their weekend opponents. SFA hosts Southeastern Louisiana (9-4-3, 4-2-1) Friday in a 7 p.m. game. The Ladyjacks will wrap up the regular season Sunday with a 2 p.m. game against Nicholls State (2-15-1, 1-6-0).
Last Week: SFA suffered its first loss in seven games, as McNeese State collected a 1-0 win over the Ladyjacks in Lake Charles, La., Friday. The defeat broke a six-game unbeaten streak that dated back to Sept. 30. SFA rebounded Sunday with a 3-0 victory over winless Lamar. Sophomore Kelli Wilson scored two goals, and classmate Erika Palmacci added the final tally. The two players are now tied for the team lead in goals with eight apiece.
SFA vs. the Lions: The Ladyjacks are 11-7-5 (.587) all-time against Southeastern Louisiana. SFA has not lost to the Lions since the 2003 season, a six-game unbeaten streak. The Ladyjacks have never lost to Southeastern Louisiana at home, posting a 7-0-3 record against the Lions in Nacogdoches.
SFA vs. the Colonels: The Ladyjacks are 14-1-2 (.882) in the series against Nicholls State. The Colonels' only win against SFA was a 1-0 decision in Nacogdoches in 2000. The Ladyjacks have a 12-game unbeaten streak against Nicholls, going 10-0-2 since that loss.
The Coaches: Jaime Frias is in his third year as head coach of the Ladyjack soccer team. He carries a career record of 32-16-3 (.657), including a 17-3-2 (.818) mark against Southland Conference foes. In 10 years at Southeastern Louisiana, head coach Blake Hornbuckle has posted a 104-64-22 (.605) overall record. Nicholls head coach Cindy Piper is 9-49-5 (.183) in her fourth season with the Colonels.
Next Week: SFA will begin play in the Southland Conference postseason tournament. The tournament is set to begin on Nov. 8 with the championship game scheduled for Nov. 11. All games will be played in Natchitoches, La.
