FRISCO, Texas - Sophomore Ashley Bailey has been named the Southland Conference's Defensive Player of the Week the conference office announced on Tuesday.
It is the first time that Bailey has earned the honor in her career and did so during a historic week for the Ladyjack program.
Bailey averaged 1.44 blocks per game and moved into the top 10 in the SLC in blocks for the year with her efforts in leading SFA to a 2-1 record on the week, including conference wins over Nicholls State and Southeastern Louisiana.
On Wednesday, Bailey tallied four blocks along with four kills and no errors in a loss to Tulane, who is ranked in the top 50 in the nation in RPI. Against Nicholls State she would pick up a pair of blocks, in addition to her three kills as the Ladyjacks picked up their 59th consecutive Southland Conference win and staked a new conference record in that category.
She would save her best for last, however, by posting a career-best seven blocks in a sweep of Southeastern Louisiana. She would also pick up eight kills and a .462 attack percentage for the match.
Bailey and the Ladyjacks will be back in action tonight at home against Sam Houston. SFA will be going for its 20th win of the season as the match will also mark the school's inaugural Dig For A Cure match. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
