FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Stephen F. Austin men and women's track and field teams started the 2007 indoor season Friday at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. Senior Darwin Johnson got SFA out to a quick start on the season recording his first individual title of the year in the weight throw.
Johnson picked up where he left off last season, dominating the weight throw competition. He won the event with a throw of 58-10.75. Johnson's throw was nine inches further than his next closest competition. Redshirt freshman Matt Langdon recorded a surprising fourth-place finish in the competition. Langdon finished the day with a throw of 55-5.75.
Leah Matthews sprinted out to a similar start in the women's pentathlon. Matthews won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.81. But after finishing third in the high jump (5-2.50) and sixth in the shot put (31-6.50), she did not finish the event. SFA received another surprising finish from its freshman class. Carrollton, Texas product Tabitha Riley had a strong afternoon, finishing as high as third in the 800-meter run (2:27.87) to finish fourth overall in the pentathlon.
The women's weight throw was almost a mirror image of the men's competition. Senior Markeisha Edwards finished second overall with a school record throw of 55-8.50. True freshman Frednisha Marshall also turned in an outstanding performance to finish fourth overall. Marshall recorded a throw of 53-7.50.
Junior Audrey Azu led the Ladyjack high jumpers. She finished in a two-way tie for fifth overall. Azu cleared a height of 5-6 to tie Arkansas' Michelle Martin.
The Arkansas Invitational will conclude Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. with the final three events of the men's heptathlon. Field events will begin at 1 p.m., while tracks events are scheduled to begin at 11:10 a.m.
