NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team heads west this weekend for a pair of games in Colorado Springs, Colo. SFA will take on Colorado College Friday at 4 p.m. (Mountain Time). The Ladyjacks follow that game up with an 11 a.m. duel against the Air Force Academy on Sunday.
Last Week: SFA recorded a big win against Houston, only to drop the following contest against regionally ranked Rice. The Ladyjacks notched a 4-1 home victory over the Cougars on Friday, marking the first win over Houston in program history. But Rice proved to be too much for SFA, defeating the Ladyjacks, 5-0. The weekend split moved SFA's season record to 4-3-0. The loss to Rice also put an end to a 17-game home unbeaten streak that spanned more than two seasons worth of action.
The Opponents: Colorado College and Air Force squared off Wednesday, with the Tigers notching a 1-0 win in overtime. The victory improved Colorado College to 6-1-0 on the season. It was the Tigers' fifth straight win and moved their home record to 5-1-0. The Tigers' lone loss was a 1-0 double-overtime defeat at the hands of the University of the Pacific. All but one of Colorado College's wins have been shutouts. The Tigers received votes in this week's Soccer Buzz Magazine Central Region Poll. The Falcons' loss against their cross-town rivals dropped their record to 1-7-2 on the year. Air Force has been outscored, 14-4, on the season and has been shut out seven times.
SFA vs. The Tigers: Friday's showdown will mark the first meeting between SFA and Colorado College.
SFA vs. The Falcons: Sunday's game will be the first between the Ladyjacks and the Air Force Academy. In fact, it will mark the first soccer game between SFA and any of the country's major service academies.
The Coaches: SFA is coached by second-year head coach Jaime Frias. Frias is 18-7-0 as Ladyjack head coach. Colorado College is coached by Geoff Bennett, who is in his third season guiding the Tigers. The Falcons are headed up by 15-year veteran Marty Buckley.
Next Week: SFA opens Southland Conference action with two road contests. The Ladyjacks head to Huntsville Friday, Sept. 27, to take on Sam Houston State, the team that eliminated SFA from the SLC Tournament last season. Sunday, the Ladyjacks will travel to Conway, Ark., for their first meeting with conference newcomer Central Arkansas.
