NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The regionally ranked Rice Owls scored two goals in the first half and three more in the second on their way to a 5-0 win over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team, Sunday. The Rice victory snapped a 17-game home unbeaten streak for the Ladyjacks and moved SFA's record to 4-3-0 on the season.
After a lengthy delay due to lightning in the area, Rice (7-0-1) opened the scoring in the eighth minute with the first of two goals by Clory Martin. Laura Barber added a second goal in the 21st minute.
Just before halftime, SFA goalkeeper Francesca Tierno was fouled hard in her own box by an onrushing Rice forward. Tierno left the game with an injury. With freshman goalkeeper Crystin Pactor still not cleared to play following an injury earlier this season, SFA turned to defender Jessica Cotton.
Cotton donned the 'keeper's black shirt and played in net the remainder of the game. She recorded one save and thwarted several Rice attacks, but the Owls still added three goals in the second frame. Beth Martin scored in the 54th minute, then Clory Martin added her second goal a minute-and-a-half later. Katelyn Ostendorf finished off the Rice scoring with an assist from Clory Martin. Martin's performance marks the first time an opposing player has tallied five or more points against the Ladyjacks since the 2004 season.
SFA will return to action next weekend with a pair of games in Colorado. The Ladyjacks will take on Colorado College on Friday, Sept. 22, then meet Air Force on Sunday, Sept. 24. The following weekend, SFA will open Southland Conference play on the road against Sam Houston State.
