NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country team kicked off the 2006 season Friday afternoon with the Lumberjack Opener at Pecan Park. Instead of the traditional team scoring, the race was relay format where athletes paired with a partner and ran against the clock. The Lumberjacks entered seven teams, while the Ladyjacks ran three teams.
The Lumberjacks did a good job of staying together in a pack as their top four teams finished with seven-tenths of a second of one another. SFA was led by the team of Cole Hollingsworth and Teddy Fanta, who crossed the finish line with a time of 38:22.54.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's duo of Josh Lopez and Shadrack Songok won the race. Songok crossed the finish line with a time of 36:20.00.
The Ladyjacks were led by the team of Amber Bagwell and LaKoa McKeever. McKeever crossed the finish line with a time of 30:34.65. The women's race was won by Tarryn DeBeer and Meghan Lemke (28:35.48) from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"The goal for today was to get in a solid workout," said cross country coach Lou Snelling. "I feel that we achieved that. We are looking improve upon this race as we head into the coming weeks."
SFA returns to action Saturday Sept. 9, when the Ladyjacks travel to Houston, Texas to compete in the Rice Invitational. The Lumberjacks will be back in action Friday, Sept. 15 at the Indiana Intercollegiate in Bloomington, Ind.
