Junior pitcher Brian Steinocher became the first Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball player selected in the Major League Baseball draft Wednesday afternoon, since the sports return to Nacogdoches in 2006. Steinocher was taken by the Boston Red Sox in the 21st round and was the 643rd overall pick.
Steinocher finished the year 3-10 (.231) overall, but pitched four complete games and was among the league leaders with 75 strikeouts. While Steinocher held opponents to a .228 batting average as a junior, he was an unfortunate recipient of low run support early in the season. He finished the year with a 4.05 earned run average.
The Lumberjacks finished the year with a 15-41 (.268) overall record but finished the season on a four-game winning streak, and won 7 of their final 9 games, including an upset of No. 10 (Baseball America Top 25 poll) Houston and a series sweep of rival Sam Houston State.
