LAKE CHARLES, La. - Senior Traci Moore led the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team to a doubleheader sweep of the McNeese State Cowgirls on Saturday to snap a five-game skid. SFA shut down the Cowgirls, 5-0, in the first game before coming from behind to force the night cap into extra innings and win, 4-3, in Southland Conference play at Cowgirl Diamond.
In Game 1, Moore went the distance on the mound to allow only one hit over seven innings while striking out four. It was the second time this season that she has only allowed one hit in five or more innings of work.
The game was scoreless for the first four innings, until the Ladyjacks' Crystal Dahlquist went to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a base-clearing triple to put SFA up, 3-0. Dahlquist then scored on Lee Lara's double to make the score 4-0.
In the sixth inning, senior Carrie Woydziak had an RBI single to increase SFA's lead to 5-0, the eventual final score.
Woydziak finished the first game going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
In the first inning of the night cap, Lara singled and crossed the dish when Jessica Tullos hit a home run, her third of the season, to give the Ladyjacks an early 2-0 lead.
The Ladyjacks were pressured as the Cowgirls put up a run in each the third and fourth inning to tie the score. McNeese State took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.
SFA resonded in the top half of the seventh inning when Dahlquist, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a single hit by Nicole Carter to knot the score at three. McNeese State was unable to respond in the bottom half of the inning to force the game into extra innings.
In the ninth inning, Lara led off with a single. After advancing to second on a sacrifice hit by Tullos, Lara moved to third base on a passed ball. She then scored on a wild pitch to give the Ladyjacks the win, 4-3.
Freshman Kari Hugie made the start from the mound in Game 2, but it was Moore who was called into the game in the seventh inning who took the win. Her two wins from the day moved her record to 6-5 on the season.
SFA sits with an 11-20 overall record and 3-8 in SLC play. McNeese State is 10-17 overall and has a 2-9 SLC mark.
The Ladyjacks and Cowgirls will face off tomorrow at 1 p.m. in the final game of the series.
