HUNTSVILLE - Freshman Josh Alexander hit a 3-pointer with 10 seconds on the clock to give the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack basketball team a 73-72 victory in Huntsville Saturday afternoon. The victory improved SFA to 16-11 (.593) overall and gives SFA the No. 4 seed in the Southland Conference Championship tournament.
Junior Antuane Miller scored 21 points and pulled down nine rebounds and senior Anthony Paez scored 17 points as the Lumberjacks built a 70-56 lead with 4:17 on the clock. But Sam Houston State didn't allow SFA to cruise to the victory. The Bearkats rattled off 16 unanswered points to take a 72-70 lead with seconds on the clock.
With only 10 seconds remaining, Alexander hit a 3-pointer to give SFA a one-point lead, 73-72. The Bearkats had one last look at the basket but couldn't get the shot to fall as SFA grabbed the final rebound, spoiling the Bearkats' comeback bid on senior day.
The `Jacks were out-shot by Sam Houston State, which finished the game 29-of-55 (.527). SFA finished 26-of-54 (.481) from the floor. Senior Marcus Clark scored 10 points and recorded four assists in his final regular-season game in a Lumberjack uniform.
The `Jacks enter the conference tournament as the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded McNeese State in the first round. The game against the Cowboys is slated to begin Tuesday at 7 p.m. from the William R. Johnson Coliseum.
