NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Five Stephen F. Austin track and field athletes will compete at a pair of different indoor meets this weekend in an attempt to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships. Three field athletes will take part in the LSU Last Chance Meet in Baton Rouge, while two combined events competitors will perform at the Idaho State Intermountain Championships.
Juniors Kenneth McKinley and Darwin Johnson and sophomore Alecia Green are set to participate in the LSU Last Chance Meet. The meet is scheduled for Friday at LSU's Maddox Field House. McKinley and Johnson will both compete in the throws, while Green will try her luck in the long jump. McKinley won the shot put competition at the Southland Conference Indoor Championships with a school-record throw of 57-09.75. Johnson was the individual champion in the weight throw, setting a new school and conference record with his toss of 60-03.25.
Senior Crystal Chang and junior Leah Matthews will compete in the pentathlon at the Idaho State Intermountain Championships in Pocatello, Idaho. The meet is a two-day competition, but the women's pentathlon is scheduled for Friday as a one-day event. Chang is coming off a second-place finish in the pentathlon at the SLC Indoors. She scored 3,907 points to break the school record that she set earlier this season. Matthews finished in third at the conference meet with a score of 3,633 points.
The NCAA Indoor Championships are scheduled for March 10 and 11, in Fayetteville, Ark.
