PLANO, Texas - Stephen F. Austin freshman guard Josh Alexander has been named the Aeropostale Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week, conference officials announced Monday. This marks the first player of the week award in Alexander's career and is the second time this season for a Lumberjack to win the award.
Alexander averaged 22 points and seven rebounds in a pair of crucial wins for the Lumberjacks last week. The Shreveport, La. native scored 18 points - 15 in the second half - to lead SFA to a 63-59 road win over Louisiana-Monroe. He grabbed seven rebounds in that contest. In Saturday's 83-69 victory over Nicholls State, Alexander connected on 10-of-15 shots from the floor for a career-high 26 points. He pulled down seven boards to lead all rebounders in the game. Alexander shot 61.5 percent for the week and hit 50 percent from 3-point range.
Alexander is making a strong case for Freshman of the Year honors. His 12.8 points per game rank second on the team and 10th in the conference. His 5.8 rebounds per contest lead the Lumberjacks and rank 11th among SLC players. Alexander's 52.5 percent showing from the field is eighth in the Southland.
Last week's wins improved SFA to 12-9 overall and 5-6 in Southland Conference play. The 'Jacks begin this week as part of a three-team tie for the fifth spot in the SLC standings. SFA opens a three-game road stint Wednesday with a 7 p.m. game at McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. Saturday, the Lumberjacks will meet Louisiana-Lafayette on the road in a non-conference clash. They'll wrap up the trip next Thursday with a 7 p.m. game at Texas-San Antonio.
