NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Short Stay at Home: The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks will take a brief respite between road trips Tuesday night when they host Schreiner University in a 7 p.m. contest. The game against the Mountaineers (0-2) fits between a pair of Saturday road games at Arkansas and Missouri. The Lumberjacks (1-2) play four of their first seven games on the road, including two road match-ups with 2006 NCAA Tournament qualifiers -- Arkansas and Southern.
Last Game: After a strong start, SFA faded late against a rallying Razorback team in Saturday's 70-59 loss at Arkansas. The Lumberjacks led three times, including a five-point edge in the first half, and held the advantage as late as the 12-minute mark in the second half, but a couple of dry spells on the offensive end gave the Razorbacks all the breathing room they needed. SFA saw its five-point first-half lead evaporate during a seven-minute scoring drought and watched Arkansas turn a one-point Lumberjack lead into a double-digit deficit during a four-minute cold spell after halftime. Sophomore center Matt Kingsley earned his first start of the season and made the most of it, scoring 18 points and pulling down eight boards to lead SFA in both departments.
vs. Schreiner: The Lumberjacks are 2-0 all-time against Schreiner. SFA won the first meeting between the two schools in 1996, when the Lumberjacks set a William R. Johnson Coliseum scoring record in their 138-69 victory. That 69-point verdict also set the all-time standard for margin of victory at SFA. In that game SFA also set school records for field goal attempts (92), 3-point field goals (19) and 3-point field goal attempts (39). The Lumberjacks last played Schreiner in 2000, with SFA collecting a 95-50 victory.
The Mountaineers: Schreiner is 0-2 and coming off a 77-68 loss at Trinity. Three Mountaineers reached double figures in scoring in that contest, and Schreiner shot 83 percent at the free throw line. But Trinity hit 54 percent from the field to overcome 22 turnovers and collect the win.
The Coaches: Danny Kaspar is in his seventh season as the head basketball coach at SFA. Kaspar is 94-78 (.547) in his time with the Lumberjacks. He is 313-130 (.707) in 15 seasons as a collegiate head coach. Schreiner is coached by Thirman Dimery. He is 17-82 (.172) in four years at Schreiner.
Up Next: The Lumberjacks hit the road again this weekend to take on Missouri. The game against the Tigers is scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m., in Columbia, Missouri.
